What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy encourages us to express our feelings and experiences by using art materials instead of words. When we find things difficult to explain or articulate properly, using art materials can help in exploring our feelings instead. Counselling or verbal therapy does not work for everyone. In Art Therapy, rather than discussing problems, you work alongside a qualified art therapist who gently guides you through the session. As well as drawing, sculpting and painting, some people like to write stories and use creative play. These are great ways to help express feelings and emotions in a safe way.

You do not have to be ‘good’ at art or be ‘naturally’ creative for art therapy to be effective!

In various studies, art-making has been shown to reduce stress hormones in our body, so we can feel more relaxed and secure after we have been making artwork alongside a trusted person.  Art making can:

  • Help to make sense of confusing or distressing feelings.
  • Help gain an insight into our subconscious.
  • Help us organise our thoughts.
  • Support our emotional wellbeing.

How can Art Therapy help ?

Both children and adults can struggle with worries, anxieties, sadness and anger. Often, we are unable to say what is troubling us; and this can reflect in our actions and behaviour. This is particularly common in children and young people. If our mental well-being is compromised – it often leads to challenges in our lives, such as difficulty in learning at school, social friendships and troubles in family life. Art therapy can help us to cope with difficult or confusing emotions in a safe environment.

Art therapists are trained in non-verbal communication which takes place during art making and creative play. Guided art making can help unpick the underlying cause of problems, such as getting angry, having trouble with friends or being unable to form healthy relationships.

Art therapy is also an exceptionally inclusive form of psychotherapy; it can be particularly helpful for neurodiverse clients and those with Special Educational Needs.

What We Do

Services that I offer

In our sessions together, we will work collaboratively to create a safe and supportive environment where you can freely express yourself through art-making. You do not need to have any previous art experience to benefit from Art Therapy, as the focus is on the process rather than the final product. I look forward to supporting you on your journey towards healing and personal growth through the transformative power of Art Therapy.

Group/Sibling Therapy

Group Art Therapy & sibling work is theme-based in order to address specific issues. Group boundaries and behaviour expectations are established, alongside the importance of group confidentiality. Group work can also be particularly helpful in facilitating communication and social interaction between people. For group & sibling art therapy to be impactful, participants must have similar experiences. For instance, domestic abuse, bereavement and divorce are topics I have covered in a group setting.
Personal art therapy

Personal therapy

I am a client-led (or child-led) therapist. I will create a personalised plan based on your individual needs. Before therapy begins, we have an assessment period where we can explore your circumstances and find the best way forward. A minimum of six sessions is recommended. Art therapy intervention can be short (minimum of 6 weeks) or it can be long term depending on your requirements.

Art Therapy in Schools

Art therapy in a school environment can have a positive impact, not only on the student themselves, but on educational attainment, friendships and families. It can help students to cope with difficult or confusing emotions in a safe environment at school. Art therapy is an intervention that helps students recognise the problems, which stop them from learning, make them angry, or causes trouble with their friends. It is also a great setting for sibling and group work.

Art therapy provision in school is dependent on the individual school timetable. Each art therapy session is between 45 – 60 minutes in length and requires a private space with access to running water. At the end of therapy, the school will receive a comprehensive written review on student progress.
Art therapy training

Art Therapy Trainees

I have a person-centred approach to art therapy. Before therapy begins, we have an assessment session and an opportunity to discuss how to best to work together. If you feel we would be a good fit, therapy can then commence. I recommend weekly sessions with regular reviews to discuss your progress.

When training to become an art therapist, the therapy work is long term, therefore I am able to offer a reduced sessional rate.
